Greasy men’s hair – Causes and Daily Care

Main Symptoms of Greasy hair

  • Rapid soiling and loss of volume: hair loses freshness and lightness shortly after washing.
  • Clumping into separate strands: excess sebum production by the sebaceous glands causes the hair to stick together into so-called “icicles.”
  • Dullness and oily shine: hair looks heavy, matte, lacking natural free-flowing shine and neatness.
  • Tendency to dandruff and itching: excess sebum on the scalp creates an ideal environment for the proliferation of the yeast-like fungus Malassezia, which is often accompanied by itching, irritation and the appearance of oily dandruff flakes or seborrheic dermatitis.

What to Pay Attention to When Choosing Products for Greasy hair

  1. Cleansing base (primary surfactants): for effective emulsification and removal of lipid dirt and sebum, the shampoo should contain effective anionic surfactants such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES).
  2. Mild auxiliary surfactants: the presence of amphoteric surfactants in the formula (e.g. Cocamidopropyl Betaine) reduces the potential irritating effect of sulfates on the scalp.
  3. Minimum oils and conditioning additives: in shampoos for oily hair the content of oils, heavy silicones and nourishing components should be minimal or completely absent so as not to weigh the hair down.
  4. Light textures and water base: all additional care products (lotions, leave-in sprays) should be water-based — in the form of gels or light lotions, not greasy creams and ointments.
  5. Antimicrobial and sebum-regulating actives: when dandruff is present, choose products with zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, salicylic acid or selenium sulfide.

Practical Home-Care Recommendations

  • Choosing shampoo according to scalp type: the cleansing product is always selected according to the needs of the scalp, not the condition of the hair.
  • Washing technique: apply shampoo twice and massage only the scalp and roots; the length of the hair is sufficiently cleaned by the foam running down.
  • Use of a clarifying shampoo: in addition to regular washing as needed, once every 1–2 weeks it is useful to use a clarifying shampoo to fully remove accumulated polymers, styling residues and sebum.
  • Adsorbent components: to maintain freshness between washes it is useful to apply dry shampoos or powders containing absorbents (starch, kaolin, silicon dioxide) to clean, dried roots. This allows binding of sebum as it is secreted during the day, but they must be washed off at the end of the day.

What to Avoid

  • Heavy plant oils: avoid coconut oil, shea butter, petrolatum and dense nourishing masks that instantly glue the hair together and make it look greasy.
  • “2-in-1” shampoos and insoluble silicones: continuous use of “two-in-one” products and dense silicone formulas leads to rapid buildup of residue on the hair and weighing it down.
  • Conditioners and oils reaching the roots: no balms, masks, care or styling oils should be applied to the scalp and root area.
  • Washing the head with too hot water: high water temperature causes intense swelling of the fibers and damages the lipid layer of the scalp.
